The K3 students explored the unit “Who We Are” through the central idea: “People make food choices for different reasons.” Our young inquirers discovered that what we eat connects to who we are—from our health and culture to the choices we make every day.
The children began by investigating what it means to eat well. Using hands-on materials and visuals, they sorted foods into groups, created “Mr. Healthy” and “Mr. Unhealthy” picture silhouettes to use when categorizing pictures of food, and designed their own balanced meals. Through these activities, they learned that healthy choices help us feel strong, focused, and happy!
Their learning didn’t stop in the classroom—it came to life through real experiences. They made shopping lists, and “visited” the supermarket to buy ingredients for the sandwich they created. Later, they applied what they learned at home by preparing a dish they created with their families. These moments of sharing helped them see that learning can extend beyond school and into everyday life.
Throughout the unit, students practiced essential communication skills by presenting their findings in posters, explaining food sources through show and tell, and sharing their learning with their Grade 3 buddies. These activities encouraged confidence, teamwork, and curiosity about the world around them.
This inquiry helped our K3 learners understand that food connects us all—it nourishes our bodies, brings people together, and reflects who we are. And along the way, they showed what it truly means to be balanced, open-minded, and curious learners.
