Exploring transportation

In K1A, the children have been developing their critical thinking skills through a variety of Visible Thinking Routines connected to our Transportation unit. These routines help children observe closely, think deeply, and communicate their ideas with confidence.

Think–Pair–Share: ‘Guess the transportation sound’

The children listened carefully to different transportation sounds and used their thinking skills to match what they heard with the correct picture. They looked thoughtfully at the choices, made a guess, and then turned to a partner to explain their thinking. After talking with their partners, they confidently shared their answers with the class. This routine supported their ability to justify their ideas and listen respectfully to others.

To extend the activity, the children drew their favorite mode of transportation and took turns presenting their drawings. They practiced speaking in full sentences, such as “I like to ride a bicycle, ” during our mini “Show and Tell. ”

I See, I Think, I Wonder: ‘Human transportation sorting’

Using the “I See, I Think, I Wonder” routine, the children explored how different vehicles travel on land, in the sky, or on water. After observing their transportation picture closely, they thought about the features they noticed, wheels, wings, or floats, and wondered where their transportation should go.

To bring their thinking to life, the children moved to the area of the classroom that represented land, sky, or water. They acted out the movement and sound of their transportation before choosing the correct category. The children enthusiastically made engine noises, flying sounds, or gentle splashes as they moved, helping them connect movement, sound, and purpose to each type of transportation.

This hands-on routine helped them build understanding of how transportation works while encouraging curiosity and thoughtful reasoning.
