As part of the G7 curriculum, students read a novel called Orchards , which is about a half half-American, half half-Japanese girl who is sent to work on her family s mikan farm due to a tragic incident in her high school. Luckily, we were able to again host a visit from the novel s author, Holly Thompson, who comes back to visit Japan every year and always e e-mails to see if she can come and speak to students at KIST!
As part of the workshop, students listened to Holly speaking about the process of writing a novel. They asked thoughtful and insightful questions, and hopefully all came away inspired by the process. Next, they had an opportunity to practice their own writing, using fun and engaging prompts to write various pieces of creative writing.
Many students were confident enough to read their work out in front of their peers, and the English teachers also collected their work in and chose some winning poems; congratulations to Ramya (G7A) and Varnit (G7B)!
G7A: Sreevaishnavi, Juelly, Mingzhe (Aki L.), Ramya, Kavin, Lillian, Wakana and Xintong (Jessica)Students who read their work out loud to the grade:
