In this month’s Staff 10!, we are pleased to present Katherine (Katie) Millican who joined us in August 2015, initially working as an ELS instructor in the Elementary School, before moving into a teaching role in August 2022. This year, she is the homeroom teacher for Grade 4A.
1) Tell us something interesting about your hometown.
It’s rare that my hometown, Cortez, Colorado, even appears on maps because it is that tiny, but it is famous for some of the largest, most well-preserved cliff dwellings in North America.
2) What is your favorite place in the world?
My favorite place in the world right now is the armchair in my living room, when I have time to lounge with good book and a cup of hot coffee.
3) Who would you like to meet if you had the chance and why?
If I had the chance, I would like to meet Greta Thunberg. I am inspired by her principled activism to fight for justice around the world.
4) Do you have any special skills or talents?
A special talent I have is reading in character voices when doing read alouds in the classroom.
5) Please share a little-known fact about yourself.
One of my favorite activities on days off from work is to pick a station, get off and start walking as far as a can while I explore the city. I once walked from all the way from Daikanyama to Odaiba.
6) What is your most prized possession?
A possession I keep near and dear to my heart is a copy of Treasure Island that I inherited from my great- grandmother.
7) Which IB learner profile attribute do you most closely identify with and why?
I most strongly identify with the learner profile of caring. It’s important to me that I approach the world with a strong sense of empathy for others.
8) If you could live your life again, would you do anything differently?
I’m happy with where I am and what I have accomplished so far (and there’s still a bright future ahead!), but if I had to do it all again, I would try to be more outgoing in striking up conversations with people when I visit new places.
9) Is there anything you are trying to learn/improve about yourself at the moment?
This year, a personal goal I have is to learn to develop my own film!
10) Do you have any special message for your fans?
Thanks to everyone’s support, I’ve been at KIST for ten years! Let’s continue together to make KIST a wonderful school for our students going forward!
