G11s visit the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo
This October, Grade 11 students visited the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo as part of their DP Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course. They explored the Choreographies of the Everyday exhibition, held in celebration of the museum’s 30th anniversary and showcasing the work of more than 30 artists from different generations and regions of the world.
The exhibition examined the cultural, political, and economic forces embedded in ordinary life, revealing forms of systemic violence and the enduring effects of oppression that often go unnoticed (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, n. d. ).
The excursion was directly linked to the TOK Exhibition, the main assessment in the G11 TOK course. Students were tasked with selecting an object that could be meaningfully connected to one of the exhibition prompts that they had chosen in advance. The five prompts that students could choose from were:
Drawing on TOK themes and key concepts, students had to justify their chosen object and explain how it could support their argument in response to their prompt. As they moved through the exhibition, they completed a reflection booklet to guide their thinking, and by the end of the visit, all students had identified a potential object for their TOK Exhibition. It was a successful and inspiring afternoon, giving students a meaningful opportunity to connect their learning with real-world perspectives.
